With the new School Year under way, we've had many changes.  First, we've added Dippin Dots and Breadsticks to our menu and taken away a couple less popular items. This year the student's will be safer this year with the addition of steps leading into the practice field.  The steps were a split cost between the Logan Hocking School District and the Logan Band Boosters.

Our Website, has added some great features, including the ability to sign up on line.  You can also look to see when your working a game.  We have also started a facebook page.

Symphonic Band Results

posted Mar 23, 2010 5:13 PM by Unknown user

The Logan High School Symphonic Band earned a superior rating in the recently held District 15 band competition, an adjudicated event held at Groveport Madison High School. Several schools from counties in the central Ohio area participated, including Hocking, Fairfield, Franklin, Pickaway and Delaware counties. District 15 is the largest in the state; the competition had to be held in a couple of event centers to accommodate everyone. Participating bands were rated as superior, excellent, good, fair or poor.
The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Jeff North, received two superior ratings and one excellent rating on the main floor and a superior rating in the sight-reading room to earn an overall superior rating. This is the 22nd consecutive year Logan High School has received an overall superior rating.
“I’m very happy about that,” North said. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s well worth it.”
Briele Miller, senior trumpet player, echoed North’s sentiment.
“I’m really impressed with us and I knew we could do it,” she said. “My favorite part is how much we can accomplish in such a small amount of time. We work together and produce a great product in the end. We prove to other bands how good we are and that we deserve (the superior rating).”
The Symphonic Band consists of 90 members, the maximum allowed by competition rules. Students are selected from the high school concert band class based on test scores. As soon as marching band season is over, students begin preparing for the competition.
“Everyday in school, we prepare for about 40 minutes during class, but we’ll practice before and after school to be as good as we possibly can,” said Ashton Walton, high school senior and trombone player. He has participated in the competition three times. “We have a great director and I don’t think we’d do as well without him.”
“I really like how when he tells us there’s going to be a competition, we get together and act like a team. It’s really important to us each year; it’s the feeling that we did great,” said Haley Walsh, also a high school senior and trombone player. Like Walton, she has participated in the contest three times.
The competition’s sight-reading judge Michael Elias commented the band played “a very fine performance, very musically done” with a “nice contrast between legato and marcato, nice attention to dynamics and precision.”
Judge David Phillips commented the band made a “beautiful ensemble sound (with) gorgeous sonority and maturity” and had “solid technical work throughout (the) performance.”
Judges also made suggestions for the band, including working on sound balance and ends of phrases.
“As a teacher, I use (the critiques) each year and try to implement them in my teaching to benefit the kids,” North said.
